Use this 10-step DIY guide to properly install your side mount drawer slides.
Installing Side Mount Drawer Slides
There are 3 basic designs built by many manufactures in different materials. The three main types are side mount, bottom mount, and bottom mount single.
Side-mount drawer slides are mounted on the side of the drawer box and telescope out to allow the drawer to extend further than a bottom mount drawer slide.
These drawer slides are generally rated to handle more weight and are attached either halfway up the side of the box, or at the bottom. To know for sure which design you have, if it doesn’t telescope, it isn’t a side mount drawer slide.
Use this 10-step guide below to properly install these drawer slides.
Step 1.
- The first step in this process involves grabbing one of the drawer slides.
- Separate the drawer profile slip from the slide by pushing the trigger disconnect lever.
- Once the lever is pressed, pull the drawer profile slip out of the slide completely.
Step 2.
- Determine the exact placement of your drawers.
- You can use a pencil to mark the spot where you wish to attach the slide.
- Ensure you check the top sides and bottom of the drawer for proper clearance.
Step 3.
- Mark both the cabinet sides and the center of the drawer box.
Step 4.
- Use a carpenter’s square to follow the mark.
- Now use this to draw a centerline on the drawer box and cabinet sides.
Step 5.
- The next task is to attach the cabinet slide.
- Place the slide so the front end of the slide will be held back from the front of the cabinetry.
- You will want there to be a space of 1/16th of an inch when placing the slide.
Step 6.
- Now use a drill to pre-drill the holes needed to attach your slides to the wood.
Step 7.
- Again, use your drill to attach the screws in order to secure the slides into place.
Step 8.
- Place the profile on the side of the drawer while making sure the front of the profile is flush with the front of the drawer.
- Use the centerline mark to center the profile on the side of the drawer.
- Go ahead and pre-drill the pilot holes when everything is even.
Step 9.
- Use the screws in order to secure the slides into place at this time.
- Insert the drawer into the cabinet once the drawer profile and slides are attached.
Step 10.
- Hold your drawer up to the cabinet and insert the back of the drawer profile into your carrier groove.
- Carefully push the drawer all the way back into the cabinet until it’s secure.
- Test it out to make sure everything moves smoothly and properly.
